Boy Scouts at ElamBoy Scout Programs at the Elam Center

 

Attention all Cub Scouts! Schedule a program of your choice at your convenience today with an Elam Pick-A-Program.

 

Cub Scout Pick-A-Programs


The Elam Center also offers a Pick-A-Program menu. Leaders can choose a date and time that is convenient for their troop/group. We ask that you request an alternate date and time because of availability. All programs are at the Elam Center located at Camp Ken-Jockety on the west side of Columbus. Program time does not include snack or bathroom breaks. Please allow a two hour block for each program and arrive at least 15 minutes early. Pick-A-Programs do not include special events or merit badges. Some programs are seasonal and all are dependent upon the Elam calendar and staff availability.

 
Tiger Scouts

Let’s Go Outdoors!
Use your senses to experiment in the great outdoors. Smell the wind, touch the soil, and taste the wildflowers. Completes achievement 5f, d and g. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.


Conservation
Learn about the value of the natural resources all around you and how to protect them. Completes elective 33, 34 and 47. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.


Feed the Birds
Bring your binoculars and learn all about our fine feathered friends, from basic bird biology to setting up a feeder in your own backyard. Completes elective 32. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.


Field and Stream
Meet the animals that live in your neck of the woods. Birds, mammals, insects, fish, amphibians and reptiles all live in our neighborhoods. Learn about their habitats and the roles they play in our lives. Completes Elective 21 and 31. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.


Darby Creek Explorer
Bring your creeking shoes and learn why the Big Darby is so special; explore the creek first hand. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.

Wolf Scouts

Your Living World
Gain a deeper respect and appreciation for the world we live in. Learn how you can be an important part of your community and protect our natural resources. Completes Achievement 7a, b, c, d and f. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.


Lets Go Camping
Knots, gathering around a campfire, sleeping in a tent, exploring the woods. What does camping mean to you? This will help get you started. Completes elective 23b, c and d. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.


Birds
Be a bird watcher. Learn to identify birds in the field and spot basic bird characteristics while assisting in bluebird box monitoring and bird management. Completes elective 13b, c, d, e and f. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.


Outdoor Adventure
Learn to prepare for hikes and outdoor outings. Practice outdoor safety and gain a sense of the environment. Completes elective 18c, d and g. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.

Elam Challenge Course

Take advantage of our low ropes course to build teamwork in your group that will last all year. Various team centered challenges will push your group to communicate and accept ideas from others while promoting cooperation and leadership. Challenges include The Spider Web, The Matrix, The Climbing Wall, The Trust Fall, The Balance Beam, The River of Fire and others.  This program is best scheduled as a Pick-A-Program with groups of 8 boys and larger. Fee $7 per boy.

Bear Scouts

Share Your World With Wildlife
Stalk through the woods like a red fox and spot small mammals like a hawk. Then watch some wildlife and learn the secrets of their lives. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.


Flight Science
Design and build some amazing flying machines like gliders, helicopters, airplanes and rockets while learning about the science behind flight. Test your designs against others in competitions of distance, accuracy, and height. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.


Darby Creek Explorer

Night Hike w/Campfire
Bring  your night eyes as we explore the woods around Elam and Big Darby Creek.  Nocturnal wildlife and the science of the dark will be topics of the hike, which will conclude with a roaring campfire. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.

Weebelos

Naturalist
Your Weebelos will study living animals and plants in the wild as they develop a love of nature. Program completes requirements 4, 7, 9, 10 and 11 of the Naturalist badge. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.


Pond Science
Get out the microscopes and pond nets as we look at the microscopic residents of the pond and study their roles in the watery world. Max 25 boys. Fee $7 per boy.

Darby Creek Explorer

Orienteering
Learn to use a compass and how  to read and follow maps. Practice your skills on a compass scavenger hunt. Max 25 boys. $7 fee per boy.

 

Outdoor Survival
Learn how to be prepared with fire safety, shelter building and practice at using your head – three important keys in outdoor survival situations. Max 25 boys.  Fee $7 per boy.

How to Sign-up for an Elam Pick-A-Program

Please use the Pick-A-Program registration form or contact the Elam Center directly.


When:  Choose a date and time convenient for your troop/group. We ask that you select alternate dates and times to best fit your group into the Elam program calendar. All Pick-A-Programs are subject to instructor availability.


Where:  All programs are at the Elam Environmental Center located at Camp Ken-Jockety on the west side of Columbus.


Time:  All programs are 2 hours in length. Please arrive 15 minutes early to allow for bathroom breaks before the program starts.

Fee:  $7 per boy per program. Add $1 per boy if fee is late or paid at the door. Do not bring payment to the program.

 

Deadline: 10 days before chosen date OR the date indicated on your invoice.

Minimum/Maximum:  7 boy minimum, 25 boy maximum. Smaller or larger groups should contact the Elam director.


Note:  Placement letters (that also serve as an invoice) will be sent with directions to the center. A minimum of 2 supervising adults must accompany each troop. One supervising adult must accompany individuals. No tagalongs. Most programs take place outdoors rain or shine and are rarely cancelled due to weather. Accommodations will be made based on current conditions. Come dressed for being outside. Troops are also encouraged to bring a portable snack (and water bottle) to eat during the program.
