CANOEING 101

Registered Girl Scouts who have completed grade 4 (minimum age 9) and up can learn to canoe in our clinic on Monday, June 30, 2008 (accompanying chaperone required). Girls will:
  • Be able to safely use canoes and canoeing equipment, including PFDs.
  • Learn basic maneuverability in canoes.
  • Use teamwork to practice steering and propelling canoes.
  • Have a safe and fun boating experience.

Girls will practice safe use of canoes and equipment, including proper fitting of PFD’s; learn the basic paddle strokes to maneuver the canoe forward, backward, side to side, and turn around; work with a buddy in a canoe to maximize their paddling efforts; practice newly learned canoe skills through games, repetition, relays and other fun activities; and work on requirements for the Paddle, Pole and Roll Interest Patch. Upon completion of the clinic, each girl will receive a participation card.

Note: The Teen Blue Lantern Weekend, July 11-13, includes optional Canoeing 101 Getting Started Clinic for girls completing grades 6 and up.

Adults will be accommodated in a canoeing clinic only if space is available. Girls will be placed first. The adult fee to participate is the same as the girl’s fee. There is no certification option as part of these clinics.

The cost is $7 per girl. For girls participating in the Teen Blue Lantern Special, the total cost is $27, which includes the Blue Lantern program and Canoeing 101 Getting Started Clinic.

BLUE LANTERN SPECIAL CAMPOUT!

Calling all Troops and Leaders and Juliettes and Girl Scout Parents! Do you want to try an overnight at camp, but think you don’t have the skills? Would you like to make new friends, play games, sing camp songs, practice some outdoor living skills, and more? If you answered “YES”, a girl and adult or a troop/group and adults can come to K-J for a beginner’s overnight at camp!

At the Blue Lantern Campout, experienced Girl Scout campers will accompany each unit to lead the participants through a typical weekend campout. Activities will include learning fire building and outdoor cooking, camp songs and games, fun things to do at camp, and how to enjoy living in the outdoors. Participants will sleep in the Ken-Jockety lodges or cabins.
